Prunus 'Shidare Yoshino' - Weeping Flowering Cherry
Prunus x yedoensis 'Shidare Yoshino' - Weeping Flowering Cherry
- believed to be a hybrid of P. speciosa and a weeping P. subhirtella
- medium size weeping deciduous tree with a prolific spring display
- white single blooms in early spring before leaves emerge are very showy
- white flowers emerge from pale pink buds along bare branches
- flowers have a faint almond fragrance and persist for 2-3 weeks
- graceful pendulous branching creates a striking specimen tree
- may occasionally produce pea-sized red to blackish fruits in summer that are attractive to birds; these are edible, but maybe not palatable
- glossy bark & glossy green leaves
- bronze and gold to yellow fall leaf coloring
- fast growing and friendly to early pollinators
- a weeping form of the well known and popular participant of national and international Cherry Blossom Festivals
- grows to 20-25 ft high by 20-30 ft wide
- for full sun to part shade; best flowering is in full sun
- can grow in many soil types, but needs a well-drained soil
- grows in zones 5-8
- this tree is on its own roots, and will require upright support to the height you want it’s lateral branching to start at
- I have some of these available with braided trunks, and singles may be a little curled from being braided
- ships bareroot, wrapped in a soil-less medium to keep the roots damp
- ships in cool spring, fall, or winter seasons; not during summer
- not available for shipment to WA or OR
Recommended companions:
- Spring bulbs to offer complementary color before leaves emerge
- Rue (Ruta graveolens), planted on the sunny side, to help deter beetles along with other pests
