Corylus avellana 'Sacajawea' - High Quality Filbert, Hazelnut

- large deciduous shrub or small tree with edible nuts
- male and female flowers (catkins) bloom separately on the same bush in late winter to early spring, on bare branches before leaf emergence
- somewhat showy yellow-gray male catkins are topped with female flowers having red stigmas
- blooms in early season for Filberts, same time as Barcelona
- requires another early to midseason pollinator for nut production; for best yield, multiple pollinators are recommended to completely cover the entire range of the female bloom period
- Lewis and Sacajawea can cross-pollinate each other; Gamma and Hall's Giant are suitable as pollinators
- Barcelona and Delta are incompatible for pollination
- large nuts (known as cobnuts) in clusters of 2 or 3 ripen in September, earlier than Barcelona
- excellent kernel quality and acceptable yields, suitable for mechanical harvesting
- kernel texture, flavor, and appearance are premium, comparable to prized Italian varieties
- high but not complete resistance to Eastern Filbert Blight, and high resistance to Big Bud Mite; better than all three leading Italian varieties
- brought to us from the filbert breeding program at Oregon State University
- globose growth habit
- beautifully textured, rounded, and hairy green leaves
- a thicket-forming shrub
- great in full sun to part shade, and well-drained soils
- generally grows 8-12 ft high and wide
- trees are hardy to zone 4b, while flowers are hardy to 5a
- grows in zones 4-8

- unable to ship to WA; other western state restrictions may apply
- ships bareroot, wrapped in a soil-less medium to keep the roots damp
- ships in cool spring, fall, or winter seasons; not during summer
